Lucy Letby inquiry: what have we learnt as it comes to an end? new Lady Justice Thirlwall has not rehashed the trial — instead she looked at what might have been done to stop the nurse’s killing spree sooner Constance Kampfner , Northern Correspondent Friday January 17 2025, 5.00pm GMT, The Times S ince the autumn, two competing debates have unfolded simultaneously in the public arena, each claiming to try and get to the bottom of what happened at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016.   Rise in baby deaths on Letby’s ward was ‘not surprising at all’ Joe Pinkstone Science Correspondent THE spike in baby deaths at the hospital where Lucy Letby worked was not surprising, a leading statistician has said. She is serving 15 whole life terms in prison. Statisticians have since questioned the veracity and validity of both of these pieces of evidence. Prof Sir David Spiegelhalter, emeritus professor of statistics at the University of Cambridge, told the Thirlwall Inqu...

It comes from a speech made in the House of Commons last Wednesday, which I must quote exactly and fully for legal reasons. It was greatly overshadowed by other events in Parliament that day and so has not – in my view – got the attention it deserved. Some of it is a little technical, but I think most people will be able to cope. It is also distressing, but that cannot be avoided. It for...
